However, it faced challenging times, especially during the Khmer Rouge era. Many of Kep’s elegant French villas now stand abandoned, but traces of the town’s former splendor remain. The seafront boasts wide sidewalks and statues that seem somewhat out of place today. Although the king’s palace overlooking the Gulf of Thailand remains unfurnished and empty, Kep is experiencing a renaissance. Mid-range and luxury guesthouses and bungalows have recently opened or are under construction.
